David Frost wins the Mauritius Commercial Bank Open
David Frost won the Mauritius Commercial Bank Open by beating Roger Chapman in a play-off on Sunday. Frost made his way into the playoff; thanks to the amazing eagle he posted at the Legend Course at Constance Belle, Mare Plage.
Beating Chapman at the second hole in the playoff, David secured the victory in his hands.
Despite many efforts, Roger Chapman could not win the tournament. Near the end of the final round, Chapman had overtaken Frost and he was two strokes ahead. That was surely an amazing feat to accomplish since Frost headed into
the final round with a four-stroke lead. Not only did Chapman overtake the lead, he led David and looked like the prospective winner of the Open.
Frost on the other hand did not let Chapman get to him and played some show stopping shots near the end. On the eighteenth hole, Frost used his three iron to putt his ball in such a manner that it landed only fifteen feet from
the hole. It really was not hard to guess that the amazing shot would end in an eagle, which it did, and thus left the player at 3 under par 69.
The eagle left the English Chapman scared and threatened. Hence, he was only able to make par on the last hole. With both the players in a tie for 13-under for the tournament, it could only lead back to the 18th for
a sudden-death playoff.
The playoff was even more exciting than the final round itself. Both the players swung flawless drives that landed right near the green. Eventually, the playoff was sent back to the 18th tee again. Here, Roger messed
up and had his shot end up in the rough on the left. He could have been saved had his second shot swung a better way. The second shot hit a tree, landed in the rough again, and needed extra force to come out.
Seeing Roger in jeopardy, David took advantage of the situation. Chapman’s slips continued to his third shot when it landed in the sand. Not being able to hole his bunker shot, Chapman was in a bad state. That is when Frost two
putted his shot and hence secured the title.
Winning the tournament, he was extremely pleased and said he really did not think he would win it. Being two shots behind on the eighteenth hole is not a winning situation after all. This win, however, has moved David up to fifth
place on the 2011 Senior Tour Order or Merit.
Chapman, having a bogey free round really impressed the crowd with the birdies on the 13th, 14th and 17th hole. Even though Frost had bogeys on the 10th and 13th hole, the
eagle hoisted him to the top. With being so near to victory, Chapman has had a pretty rough week. Roger lost his lifelong mentor, coach and friend George Will last Monday. Being an amazing golf personality, Will really affected Chapman and Roger’s performance
in the tournament was very much inspired by the memory of his dear friend. Roger even said that he wanted to win for George and was very emotional on the course today.
As for other players, Gary Wolstenholme finished at third place with a minus nine and Barry Lane finished in fourth place with a eight under. The Irish Denis O’Sullivan finished joint ninth after posting a 68.
Despite all the efforts by everyone, the star of the show was clearly David Frost. He did not get under pressure and showed everyone what an amazing golf player he is.
“I'm delighted to have won here - it is another great experience in my life that I will never forget. I have been very privileged to play and win all over the world and this is another important chapter for me,” said David
Frost.
