David Garner supports the retention of Todd Carney despite his repetitive fallouts
As Todd Carney, the troubled player inching closer towards another, National Rugby League (NRL) club de-registration, David Garner, the chief executive of Rugby League Players Association, believes that club should retain this valuable resource and help
him out of his troubles.
This week has been a real tough one for Carney as he had to face the fury from all quarters for the repetitive complaints of his misconduct and problems pertaining to the alcohol consumption.
Carney has a long history of breaching the club’s code ever since he joined the Sydney Rooster. The Monday night’s incident is the third of its kind when Carney along with his two other club mates, Nate Myles and Frank-Paul Nuuausala headed out for a night
out against the club’s booze ban.
However, this incident angered the fans and club officials alike and the disciplinary action committee was convened on Wednesday, August 10, to decide the future of the three alleged players.
In lieu of the meeting convened, the trio was handed in their breach of contract notices along with the suspension from Sunday’s match against the St. George Illawarra in Wollongong.
The situation is deeper than it seems because the club is heading out for a permanent solution for this recursive problem which surfaces out over and over again. Now, Carney’s endangered fate is once again inching closer to the de-registration from the NRL
as the chief executive, Steve Noyce, has indicated that the Roosters’ are also considering the option of sacking Rooster’s utility back, who played a pivotal role in taking the club to the grand final showdown in 2009.
With that being said the final take on this matter will be made during the next week as the player will appear in front the entire squad to explain his uncalled for drinking habits against the club’s code of discipline.
Nonetheless, this is a very tough decision for the club as Dally M medal winning player is one of the club’s key players. Garnsey is bent on retaining him on board, by helping him move out of his problems.
Garner shared his views on this issue and said, “I don't think you deal with a problem by just getting rid of it. Yes, people are concerned about the volume of times they read about Todd Carney. He's doing things on this occasion which are a breach of team
protocol rather than anything else. The Roosters are taking action in respect of that. I don't see what terminating his employment at this point solves for anybody. I think it's a very positive thing for him to be at the Roosters and for the game to have him
at the club.”
According to Garner, the only fair reason for Carney’s termination should be that he has lost the complete trust of his team mates; which certainly is the case with him.
