David Gilbert hits first victory beating Martin Gould in Round 1 of 2012 World Snooker Championship
England’s David Gilbert made his way successfully into the opening round of the 2012 World Snooker Championship after putting up an excellent snooker display in the qualifying session at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield.
Gilbert faced compatriot Martin Gould in the first round clash and was able to defeat him after a close encounter by the score line of 10-8 at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.
David cruised into the Crucible Theatre for the second time in his career and so far has cashed his appearance with a marvellous victory over Gould. Gilbert crashed out of the professional circuit in the last season but the 39-year-old Englishman made it
back brilliantly after clinching back the professional spot through the World Snooker Qualifying School (Q School) Event three.
The Tamworth potter breezed into early lead pocketing impressive knocks in the first couple of sessions. He was leading 6-3 when Gould bounced back into the match and reached 9-5. After that he clinched three more sets to hit the 9-8 score line. Before Gould
could do more damage, Gilbert played outstandingly and won the 18th frame to put an end to the contest.
While speaking to World Snooker after his match, Gilbert said, “It's a massive relief, at 9-5 I just wanted the match over as quickly as possible and Martin just started to play brilliantly. I think at 9-8 he was favourite the way he was playing.”
He added, “I felt fine yesterday, I had no great expectations I knew that if I played alright I could compete. I started well and just carried it on. It was a bit of a struggle today but it has to be expected, I'm not used to playing here but now I've got
over the line I feel great.”
Gilbert has a tough match ahead as he is going to face the former World Snooker Champion from Australia, Neil Robertson in the second round of the competition. To be able to beat Robertson, Gilbert will be looking to stay focused and not give any chances
to the Aussie cueman. It will be interesting to see how Gilbert manages to put in a good performance at the 2012 World Snooker Championship.
