David Gilbert thrashes Robbie Williams in Round 2 – 2011 World Snooker Q School, Event 3
David Gilbert has defeated Robbie Williams by a frame score of 4-1 in the best-of-seven frames match of the Event 3 of this season’s World Snooker Q School on day four.
The final event of the 2011 World Snooker Q School is being held at the World snooker Academy in Sheffield.
Gilbert, who previously lost his battle in the final round of the first two events, is making a strong bid for the main tour card in the final event of the Q School. It was a mind-boggling performance from him, as he knocked in a superb clearance of 140
in order to secure a place in the next round. Meanwhile Williams, who previously whitewashed Dean Venables by a frame score of 4-0, crashed out.
The overall score-line between both players was 0-83 (53); 98 (98)-31; 63-56; 140 (140)-0; 60-34.
Williams dominated the opening frame with a modest break of 53 to draw the first blood 1-0 before he lost the next four in a row as his opponent was almost invincible afterwards.
Staffordshire’s Gilbert showed no reeling effects and straightaway responded with a magnificent break of 98 in the second to level the things by 1-1. The third frame was a bit cagey. A bout of safety play was seen between the players but in the end, Gilbert
came on top to go in front at 2-1.
The fourth frame was over in no time as Gilbert, who was dropped off the professional circuit at the end of the last season, mopped up a classy break of 140 in it.
Williams, who was now left down at two frames with three to play, had his chance in the following fifth but he failed to capitalise on it and Gilbert finished the match without doing anything outstanding.
Gilbert has now set up a potential match against Bobby Cruickshanks in the Round 3.
