David Gill gives manager Sir Alex Ferguson the green light to sign one new player
Manchester United’s Chief Executive David Gill has made public the fact that Manager Alex Fergusson has the cash to sign a top player. Gill however stated that players available in the market do not provide the required value for money paid in an attempt to justify United’s inactivity in the transfer mill.
After finishing second in the English Premier League last season, Ferguson admitted that there were “minor tweaks” which needed to be fixed in his squad in order to bolster his squad for the summers. The club has already splashed £20 million on signing youngsters Chris Smalling and Javier Hernandez in an attempt to improve the squad. However, many of the fans are still hungry for one high profile signing this year, which would calm the critics down, and make them more confident that their beloved club can win some silverware in the coming season. Gill has however hinted that United may well make one big signing come the 31st of August which is the day when the transfer window expires.
With veteran Paul Scholes nearing retirement, Ferguson is looking for a long term replacement for the midfielder. Inter Milan superstar Wesley Sneijder and Germany’s young sensation Mesut Ozil have been linked for a move to the 18-time English champions, but Ferguson is yet to find a player which offers the right value for money. Ozil however is available for a mere 10 million pounds, owing to his contract expiry with his current club Werder Bremen due next year.
The Chief Executive of the club, David Gill confirmed that there is no issue on the financial front, and would provide as much cash as needed should there be a player who can improve the overall squad. Gill stated that United currently has a top squad, and the team has synergized well enough over the years. To be able to improve such a squad, a high quality and extraordinary player must be signed.
The official added that Manchester United are looking for players all year round, and doesn’t start looking when the transfer window opens. Gill added that they are still assessing the situation and have been monitoring a lot of players who have shined at the World Cup. Gill assured that the club was aware of many of the World Cup stars which signed at the grand stage, even before they had played in the tournament.
David Gill claimed that manager Sir Alex Ferguson is content with the current squad and enjoys a composed set of players. He said, "That's not to say something won't happen, but I think it is a 'might', not a 'will'. We will see what happens over the next six weeks.”
Sir Alex Ferguson has been known for buying young player rather than fully established stars, and then gives them time to polish their talent. Players like Ronaldo, Van Nistelrooy, Rooney and others came to Manchester United at very young age, and made names for themselves by working with the club over the years. Ferguson was interested in signing Italian teenage sensation Mario Balotelli, who made a name for himself with the Champions League winner Inter Milan. Ferguson, in his own words, stated that he would convert the Italian teenager into the “next Cristiano Ronaldo” should the player signup with the Premier league club. Balotelli however has expressed his interest in signing for rivals Manchester City, and reports suggest that a deal may very well have been struck.
Sir Alex faces a lot of issues going into the new season, and many of the low lying teams have started to grow which would create problems for the club. Manchester City, since its acquisition by the Abu Dhabi Group, has established itself as one of the most important clubs in the world, as it hosts many of the globe’s top most talent. Players like Tevez, David Silva, Yaya Toure and others feature at the club, and are strong title contenders for the upcoming season. Ferguson would therefore want to have top quality players in his squad, if he’s to win the title for a record 19th time this season.
