David Goffin dismisses Pablo Andujar to enter round two – Valencia Open 2012
Belgian challenger, David Goffin, took down the local contestant, Pablo Andujar, in straight sets at the Valencia Open 2012 on Monday. He penned down a 6-2, 6-2 success over the world number 40 to progress into the second round at this ATP (Association of
Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 Series event held in Valencia, Spain.
Goffin showed brilliant skills to outrun the 26-year-old in their second meeting at this indoor hard court event. After earning success in one hour and 11 minutes, Goffin not only avenged his loss at the Barcelona Open earlier this season but also levelled
the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head Series by 1-1 against the Valencia resident.
The 21-year-old made a strong entry at the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències. He drew the first blood in the second game and took a 2-0 lead. Goffin gifted away his serve in the third game but went on a three-game tear with two breaks of serve. Regardless
of losing his serve again in the seventh game, the Belgian cashed another break chance and clinched the opener with a 6-2 score line.
Ranked 45th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Goffin lost his track in the following set and gifted away his opening serve. However, he went berserk after that and reeled off proceeding five games in a row. Regardless of losing
his serve again in the very seventh game, the Belgian broke his rival’s serve again and clicked the set with a 6-2 win.
The Belgian youngster spilled seven double faults and several unforced errors, eventually losing his serve four times. However, he sought 11 break chances and clobbered a better first serve share of 52 per cent in contrast with Andujar’s 41 per cent. He
also availed 13 out of 24 points on it and finished the match with 57 points.
Goffin will next face the American number one, John Isner. The fifth seed battled past Italy’s Fabio Fognini in a three-set thriller to set up this meeting. Isner dropped his serve once but capitalised on three out of 13 break chances, eventually formulating
a 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-5 success.
