David Goffin ousts Mischa Zverev to lift the title – Orange Open Guadeloupe 2012 CH
Belgian star, David Goffin, took down the German contender, Mischa Zverev, in straight sets at the Orange Open Guadeloupe 2012 on Sunday. He formulated a 6-2, 6-2 success against the Russian-born to lift the title at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals)
Challenger Tour event held on the hard courts in Le Gosier, Guadeloupe.
The 21-year-old displayed his best tennis to outclass Zverev in straight sets at these Guadeloupian hard courts. He lost his serve twice and broke his opponent’s serve six times to conquer the tournament.
Ranked 112th in the South African Airways ATP World Rankings, Goffin convincingly entered the Stade Lambert Lamby and held his opening serve convincingly. He lost his serve once but cashed in all three break chances to seal the opener with a 6-2
win. The Belgian produced a slightly higher first serve share of 63 per cent in contrast with Zverev’s 61 per cent but amazingly clicked 11 out of 17 points on it.
Goffin maintained consistency in his game in the follow-up set. Apart from losing his serve once, he capitalised on half of the six break chances to pocket the set by winning six games to two. The Belgian clobbered a much better first serve share this time
and superbly availed 15 out of 19 points on it.
Summing up the higher ranked contestant’s performance, Goffin smashed four ferocious aces and ruled throughout the match. He committed three double faults but manifested a better share on his returns.
Later that day, the French duo, Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Albano Olivetti, showed exceptional skills to upset the third seeded Australians, Paul Hanley and Jordan Kerr, and capture the doubles title.
The underdogs made quick in-roads in the opening set. They swiped in entire serves without facing any hindrance. On the other hand, French tandem capitalised on one out of five break chances to clinch the opener with a 7-5 score line.
Hanley and Kerr sought their rhythm in the second set. They plucked their entire serves without facing any breakpoint and capitalised on two out of four break chances to pull out the equaliser with a breadstick.
The match went to the super tie-breaker where the French junction re-gathered their strength and got back in action. They displayed their skills again and outclassed the Aussies with a 10-7 score line.
Overall, Herbert and Olivetti produced a lower first serve share but tremendously clinched 25 out of 31 points on it.
