David Goffin to begin the new season at Heineken Open – Tennis News
World number 46, David Goffin, has accepted an offer from the Heineken Open officials to start his New Year at Auckland. He will take part in the contest that will also feature the likes of the former world number seven, Mardy
Fish, and the top seed Spanish workhorse, David Ferrer, who is ranked fifth in the world. It will be a pleasant experience for the 21-year-old Belgian to play alongside such big names and gain confidence especially after some enthralling performance in the
current season.
The 46th ranked Belgian was praised by the former world number one Roger Federer who stated, “He's got great potential in terms of his touch and the way he reads the game. He takes a backhand early and he absorbs pace
really well, [especially] from the baseline.” He seems to be a promising player and one of the futures but the consistency of play is missing that needs to be sorted out as soon as possible to help him break into the elite category of Top-20 athletes next
season.
The kid took part in the Aircel Chennai Open as a wildcard entrant and launched an onslaught against the seeded compatriot, Xavier Malisse; defeated him from a set down stage and registered another comeback in the second round
before bowing out to the top seed Serb star, Janko Tipsarevic. He was unlucky to miss out an opportunity to play the Australian Open courtesy to the shocking defeat in the second qualifier.
Goffin came up with a breakthrough run in Open 13 and Sony Ericson Open that helped him to pile some crucial points but the emphatic run that witnessed the Belgian reaching the new heights of fame was the three main round victories
at the Roland Garros French Open. He was the lucky loser in the draw and took full benefit of the opportunity allotted to him; won the opening set against the second ranked Swiss legend, Roger Federer, as well but couldn’t keep up the hard work and bowed out
later.
Two wins at the Wimbledon Championship were also added to his tally. Let’s hope the 21-year-old youngster carries the good form into the new season and keep on entertaining the crowd.
