David Goffin trounces Yuichi Sugita in the quarters – Orange Open Guadeloupe 2012 CH
Belgian’s David Goffin, devastates the Japanese rising star, Yuichi Sugita, with a bagel at the Orange Open Guadeloupe 2012 on Friday. He nudged up a 6-0, 6-2 victory against the world number 170 to book a spot in the final four at this hard court tournament
taking place in Le Gosier, Guadeloupe.
The 21-year-old displayed solid performance to overpower Sugita in straight sets at Stade Lambert Lamby. He swiftly plucked his entire serves and broke the Japanese’s serve five times to advance into the semi-finals.
Goffin stormed into this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event and went on a six-game rampage. He kept his entire serves without facing any hindrance and converted three out of eight break opportunities to his advantage, ultimately
sealing the opener with a spectacular 6-0 score line.
Ranked 148th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Goffin maintained his intensity in the proceeding set. He smoothly slid his entire serves after blocking the lone breakpoint he faced. The Belgian capitalised on two out of three
break chances and pocketed the set by winning six games to two.
All in all, the Belgian manipulated a better first serve share of 49 per cent in contrast with Sugita’s 33 per cent and brilliantly marked 18 out of 20 points on it. He also fully capitalised on six double faults the Japanese’s spilled and subsequently earned
the limelight.
Goffin will next confront the fourth seed, Edouard Roger-Vasselin, who battled past Benjamin Becker in a three set thriller to set-up this match. The French made a strong start and drew the first blood in the third game of the opening set. However, he not
only squandered the lead but lost the opener with a 4-6 shock.
Regardless of losing an early serve break, the French recovered in the tenth game and eventually outmuscled Sugita with a 7-6(7) win.
The world number 89 lost his serve in the eighth game of the final set but made a fitting reply as he bagged the following four games successively to pull out the decider with a 7-5 score line.
