David Gregory of Great Britain accepts sponsorship offer by the Allstar Uhlmann UK – Fencing Update
British fencer, David Gregory, has received a huge sponsorship boost with an offer made by the Allstar Uhlmann UK. The sponsorship offer came from Worldwide Allstar and Uhlmann, who are the top suppliers of fencing equipment to the World’s best fencers.
With this deal, the Wrexham fencer will be able to become a full-time athlete.
The timely offer came to him when he was on the verge of retiring from the sport due to shortage funds required for appearing in the competitions.
This sponsorship has opened doors for the young fencer to accomplish his ambition of not just competing at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics in Brazil, but also make himself prepared for the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games, as he is a potential candidate
for the British team.
Gregory commented about the deal, “This will make an enormous difference to both myself and the sport locally. There is only a small amount of funding for top flight fencers in the UK and in order to receive it you have to live and train in London. Even
then the funding isn't guaranteed for more than a year at a time. Now, with Allstar's backing I can concentrate on training and raising the profile of the sport locally and regionally over the coming years.”
The British fencer has not just confined himself as a professional athlete but also provides training as a coach. He is a passionate representative of the sport, as he teaches fencing in his club Wrexham, along with many other schools and clubs in the region.
With his athletic future secured in the hands of his sponsors, the fencing star now intends to introduce the sport in schools. He also plans to create a platform for those who are interested in picking up fencing, as a profession.
Gregory, added, “In the build up to the London Olympics fencing's profile will undoubtedly increase and now with the help of Allstar Uhlmann I can promote my sport in North Wales and North West England said Gregory.”
At the age of 11, David took up the sport fencing. He represented Wales at the 2010 Commonwealth Championships and also participated on the behalf of Great Britain at the senior level. He was nationally placed fourth in the all over United Kingdom (UK) rankings.
His achievements include winning the 2010 Wrexham County Senior Sports Personality Award. He is the only Welsh fencer who has won back to back British Championships. He will be defending his Wrexham Open title in June, this year.
As for the record, about 80 percent of fencers that appeared in the 2008 Beijing Olympics used Allstar and Uhlmann fencing equipment. Therefore, David is now among the group of world’s finest fencers that intend to reach the pinnacle of the sport.
