David Griffin pulls out of running for general manager position at Los Angeles Clippers – NBA Update
After Neil Olshey left the Los Angeles Clippers to take over the position of General Manager at the Portland Trail Blazers earlier this month, the hunt to find a suitable replacement has been on at the franchise.
In this regard, there had been rumours linking Cleveland Cavaliers assistant general manager David Griffin. However according to recent reports, Griffin has ruled himself out of running for the position and feels that a move to
Hollywood is not right for his career at the moment. Griffin had held talks with the Clippers management in Chicago at pre-draft camp and looked to be in strong contention for the position.
When Olshey left the job it was rumoured that the Clippers were offering a poor financial package as compared to the Trail Blazers, but the details of why Griffin has backed off are not clear as of now.
With the latest setback it does not seem likely that the Clippers will succeed in finding a suitable candidate before the NBA draft on June 28.
The Clippers had previously interviewed Denver Nuggets general manager, Kiki Vandeweghe for the position as well. They have also been in talks with several other candidates which included the likes of Jim Paxson, Larry Harris,
Jeff Weltman and Tony DiLeo but haven`t made a decision till now as to who would be their next general manager.
At the moment, they do have bigger matters to divert their attentions towards. Clippers have the 53rd pick in this year`s draft on June 28th and even with not much space in the salary cap, they will be looking
to add some more firepower in their roster. They also have to keep in mind the status of Chauncey Billups, who is one of the players awaiting the decision of the appeal filed against the Bird Rights ruling by NBA commissioner David Stern.
Currently for the Clippers, head coach Vinny Del Negro, director of player personnel Gary Sacks and team president Andy Roeser have been dealing with off court matters and the arrival of a GM would have been perfect before the
draft and the trade deadline.
With no possible replacement coming in soon, these three will have to continue to look over the matters.
