David Haye admits he could not do well against Wladimir Klitschko – Boxing news
Former World Boxing Association’s world heavyweight champion David Haye has admitted he was not giving his 100 percent during his much-anticipated unification bout for the heavyweight titles against Wladimir Klitschko.
David ‘the Hayemaker’ Haye took on Wladimir ‘Dr. Steelhammer’ Klitschko, on July 2, 2011 at the Hamburg’s Football Stadium in Germany in a mega unification showdown which had WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO and Ring Magazine Championships belts on the line.
Haye talked a lot ahead of the bout but on the fight night he was seen in a defensive mode for most of the time due to which he lost to the 6 ft 6” Ukrainian giant, Klitschko, via unanimous decision.
The 30-year-old brash Londoner claimed after the match that he had a wounded toe due to which he couldn’t launch his Hayemaker punch but now the Brit has finally admitted he was not fighting Wladimir with a pure fighting heart.
“I wasn’t firing on all cylinders, for whatever reason,” Haye admitted told Daily Telegraph. “It wasn’t the real me in there, and you always want to go out showing everybody what you really have.”
Haye has postponed his retirement plans as he is finally getting a chance with Wladimir’s elder brother Dr. Ironfist, Vitali Klitschko, who is the current World Boxing Council world heavyweight champion.
The 40-year-old Vitali is one of the most dominant heavyweight fighters at the moment. He holds a record of winning 43 of his 45 professional fights, 40 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout. However, Haye believes if he gives his 100 percent against
Vitali, then he can definitely regain his image.
“So if I go out there and give 100 per cent, I know I have a good chance of beating Vitali. The only way I can prove that I can do what I said before I faced Wladimir, is go out there and redeem myself in my mind against Vitali. At 100 per cent fit, you
would see the real fighter I have in me out there,” Haye added.
