David Haye hopeful of Khan’s return to the top level – Boxing News
Former unified former unified world cruiserweight champion David Haye believes fellow Briton fighter Amir Khan will return to the ring with his fullest. According to Haye, Khan was in full control against Garcia but unfortunately was knocked out of nowhere.
“I watched the fight and he (Khan) was in full control,” answered Haye when asked about Khan’s performance on July 14 against unbeaten American Danny Garcia.
He added, “I believe he has got the beating of Garcia. Garcia is a very good opponent, but he just got caught with a punch.”
Khan won the first two rounds but was knocked out in the third round. He came back but could not get back in control. He hit the mat twice during the fourth round, compelling the referee to stop the fight.
Carl Froch, another British fighter, remarked Khan’s career is a ‘write off’ and that the British-Pakistani boxer should retire, something that Haye does not agree with.
“Lennox Lewis, one of the greatest fighters of all time, got took out with one punch. It happens. Roberto Duran got knocked out by Thomas 'The Hitman' Hearns. Did he retire after that? No. He came back, and became world champion again,” Haye added when asked
if Khans should retire or not.
Haye is confident that Khan will make a comeback soon and he will again be the champion.
Haye knocked out Dereck Chisora the same day on which Khan was knocked out by Garcia. Khan lost his WBA light welterweight title to Garcia with the loss. As of now, Garcia retains his WBC light welterweight title, and holds the WBA light welterweight title
and Ring Magazine’s light welterweight title.
Khan’s defeat was shocking to his fans and fellow fighters. Now, the Bolton proud is insisting on a rematch, while Garcia’s camp has already rejected the offer. According to Angel Garcia, Danny Garcia’s father and trainer, Amir Khan is an ‘old pair of shoes’
and there is no way his son and fighter will face the Briton again. However, Khan believes Garcia will be man enough to face him again to prove the American was not lucky past Saturday.
