David Hearn and Graham DeLaet make it to the second stage of the PGA Tour Playoffs
David Hearn and Graham DeLaet made it to the second stage of the PGA Tour Playoffs – the Deutsche Bank Championship – after recording top-10 finishes in The Barclays, on Sunday, August 26, 2012.
Both the players ranked 108th and 106th in the FedEx Cup points list, prior to the start of the first Playoff event at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale. It was essential for them to move to the top-100 in order to be a part of the field at TPC Boston in
Norton, Massachusetts.
The Canadians made it easily, as Hearn grabbed the 67th spot, while DeLaet surged to the 44th position in the standings, at the end of the tournament.
Hearn failed to post low scores throughout the week. However, he managed to hang around the par mark, which paid him off in the end, in the form of the tied 10th place.
According to him, he played brilliantly, considering the fact that the course is ranked one of the toughest on the PGA Tour.
The heavy rough and narrow fairways did not allow the players to post low scores. Even the winning score recorded by Nick Watney was a 10-under par.
The second place was earned by Brandt Snedeker with a seven-under par score. Therefore, Hearn’s three-under par tournament score was good enough to be proud of.
"I haven't felt like I've been driving it very well lately but something clicked last week," he stated.
The notable was DeLaet’s round of 65 that included six birdies and an eagle against two bogeys on Sunday. It was the best round of the day.
"It was just one of those days," said DeLaet. "They don't come around too often so you appreciate them when they happen. Before you know it, I lost track of how many under I was. It was an awesome day”.
He also pocketed $281,000 prize money, which marked his first season ever to earn more than $1 million. "It's kind of neat," he stated. "I still kind of pinch myself. I remember the days on the Canadian Tour when I had a really good year and earned $96,000”.
Both the players now aim to make it to the final stage of the Playoffs – the Tour Championship.
