David Higgins secures second place in the Titleist PGA Play Offs
David Higgins of Ireland faltered for a two-over par 73, in the final round of the Titleist PGA Play Offs, to finish second on the leaderboard, on Thursday, December 13, 2012.
The tournament was being played at the Antalya Golf Club’s PGA Sultan Course, featuring a total of 24 players, contending for coveted spots in the BMW PGA Championship and the PGA Cup.
Last year, Higgins lost to Richard Wallis by one stroke to finish tied second in the 2011 edition of the tournament.
This year, the Waterville Golf Links pro was planning to go one spot better. For that purpose, he marked a strong start to his campaign by taking the lead on day one, after carding a five-under par 66.
The second round witnessed him score a one-under par 70, which dragged him down to the second position on the leaderboard.
However, he still had a great opportunity to surge to the top, as he was trailing the leader by just one stroke, entering the last 18 holes.
The Irishman got of a flying start, as he recorded two birdies and an eagle, against a lone bogey, on the front nine of the course.
Entering the back nine, he was holding the sole lead. However, the final nine holes witnessed him lose control over his game, and he conceded five bogeys, without adding a single shot to his scorecard.
As a result, he slipped way behind the defending champion Wallis, who comfortably secured a four-stroke victory, for the second time in a row.
Despite finishing poorly in the tournament, Higgins was pleased to secure his place in the BMW PGA Championship and the Great Britain and Ireland team for the PGA Cup.
“I wanted to win but all I wanted was to hang on for the top two places and the tour starts that gets you,” he said. “I know it’s an awful way to be thinking but I just couldn’t get it out of my head”.
He added, “Mentally I was bad and just hit bad shots. That’s not good enough but I’m delighted to get second and it would also be an honour to play in PGA Cup”.
