David Higgins warns of traffic problems during London Olympics 2012
A statement made by the chief executive of the Network Rail, Sir David Higgins, has appeared recently in the Financial Times that predicts the problems that the transport system of London is going to face once the London 2012 Olympic Games arrive in the
capital of England on July 27.
Higgins warned of the anticipated problems while talking to the Financial Times in the following manner, “What you need to understand is that during the Games bad things will happen. There is going to be track circuit failure, there will be overhead line
breakages, there will be cable theft. Probably there will be suicides – there always are over a 60-day period, that’s just going to happen unfortunately.”
In order to test what likely problems may arise and what can be done to decrease the predicted traffic congestion during the time of the Games, the British government has decided to conduct a test that would span a period of seven days.
British civil servants that amount to thousands are not going to be coming to work using the regular mode of transport that is available in the city, rather, they have been required to either work from their homes or uses bicycles to commute to office.
The London Organizing Committee for Olympic Games has provided a tentative map on its official website for the Games that provide the hot spots for underground transport system during the time of the Olympic Games.
Despite the map, the London tube commuters have been foretold of the likelihood of standing in queues for as long as 30 minutes before they could board the subway in order to reach their destination.
Despite the assurances that the local residents of London have been given by the LOCOG, the warnings from Higgins come as a serious concern as he is held to be one of the most experienced planners of the Olympic Games in the United Kingdom.
Higgins has been able to earn this credibility by having planned four Olympic Games. According to Higgins, how successful an Olympic Games end up to be largely depend on the traffic control in the city it is being hosted in.
