David Horsey vows to defend his title at Trophée Hassan II on European Tour next week
Englishman David Horsey is all set to defend his title this year at the royal Trophée Hassan II, played in the back yard of none other than the king of Morocco His Majesty King Mohammed VI himself.
Horsey describes the experience as a “great privilege” and hopes to retain the title amid the grizzled field this year.
Horsey said, “It’s an awesome course so I’m looking forward to getting back there, it’s always in mint condition because nobody ever plays it, and to play in a king’s back garden is always something special. It’s a great privilege”.
The 26-year-old Horsey has one of the most stable and delectable swings in the sport and has done well so far in his short professional career.
He hasn’t done well enough in the current season and his best finish so far came in the Volvo Golf Championship where he landed a joint 16th.
Barely dejected with his poor form and performance, Horsey insists he will shoot back in form at his favourite hunting ground in the North African country.
He added, “I haven’t had the best start to the season but my game feels like it’s slowly getting there, so I’ll be looking forward to kick-starting the year in Morocco and I’ll be giving it a good go to successfully defend my title”.
The luxurious course Golf du Palais Royal lies in the Royal Palace of Agadir in Morocco and is only used by the King himself. The course designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior, remains in pristine form as it is not treaded upon all year.
Horsey won the title last year after a thrilling competition with Welshman Rhys Davies and South African Jaco Van Zyl on the Playoff.
Turning professional in the year 2007, Horsey has won four professional titles in the course of his career. Being an active player on the Challenge Tour on the European Tour, Horsey won twice before switching over to mainstream European Tour.
He won the BMW International Open in 2010, his maiden victory on the European Tour. He was also the Challenge Tour Rankings Winner in the year 2008 after surging to the top of the list with his consecutive victories.
The Trophée Hassan II, will be played with a different format this year. The event was played on the Pro-Am format last year when two professional players were paired with two amateur players for the first two rounds of the event.
This year, however, the normal format will be followed which will attract bigger crowds and more fans of the sport. The event is scheduled from March 22-25 at the scenic Golf du Palais Royal.
The course is rendered as one of the most intricately manicured courses in the world.
