David Horsey wins the play-off to capture Trophee Hassan II – European Tour News
The Trophee Hassan II which was being played in Agadir, Morocco concluded yesterday. It was a rather tense finish at the end with David Horsey, Rhys Davies and Jaco Van Zyl having the same score. They faced each other in a two-hole play-off, where David
Horsey emerged as the champion.
Horsey, defending champion Rhys Davies and Jaco Van Zyl had the same four day score of thirteen-under par, 274. They went to a two-hole play-off, where Horsey birdied the second extra hole to win the championship.
It was a sensational final round, as three players were tied at the top and the galleries were certainly entertained by the level of play on the final day.
Horsey had an easy chance at the end to win by a margin of two shots. He carded a moderate final round of three-under par, 69 which included a superb ace. He made a hole-in-one at the par-3, 2nd and had a total of six birdies, three bogeys and
a disastrous double-bogey on the finishing hole.
It would have been a costly double-bogey for Horsey if he failed to win in the play-off. It was the pressure which got to him at the end, as his drive on the par-4, 18th was stuck in the woods. From thereon, he had to be content with a double-bogey.
This was his second win playing on the European Tour. The 25-year-old Englishman was more than pleased with his second victory within a time span of a year.
After the win, Horsey said, “I played well all week and did a lot of things well but I just couldn’t get the ball in the ball in the hole at the end. I don’t really know what to say about that to be honest. It is just one of those things that happen in golf.”
Defending champion Davies was a little disappointed not to have won this year again. He managed to card a round of three-under par, 69 but did not win in the play-off. The Welshman had six birdies and three bogeys on his score card. He dropped shots on hole
numbers 2, 9 and the closing 18th.
Davies last bogey on the finishing par-4, 18th proved to be a costly one for him, as he lost the opportunity for a title defence. It was very exciting on the closing hole, where he only needed to make a par for winning the title, but failed to
make the putt.
South African, Jaco had a round of four-under par, 68. He made six birdies including two bogeys on his card.
George Coetzee of South Africa finished at the fourth spot. He had a four day score of eleven-under par, 276 and was two behind the winner. Coetzee had four birdies and a lone bogey in his round of three-under par, 69.
The four day event turned out to be a great one, as there were large galleries on the final day around the leaders.
The Englishman Horsey picked up the beautiful coveted trophy along with the winner’s cheque of € 250,000.
