David Howell hopeful for a debut at the DP World Tour Championship
David Howell of England is set to make it to the top-60 in The Race to Dubai, which will guarantee him a playing card for the European Tour’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
The $8 million tournament will be played at the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates, featuring the top-60 players in the European Tour’s money list.
The four-time European Tour winner is currently enjoying a good form and is regarded as one of the favourites to qualify for the tournament this year.
Last week at the ISPS Handa Perth International, in Australia, he finished tied for the fifth position and surged to the 64th place in The Race to Dubai.
Talking about his performance last week, he stated that he was really pleased to record a strong finish in Australia, which earned him a place in the Barclays Singapore Open, scheduled next month.
“It was a really good finish in Australia which has helped me gain an entry for the tournament in Singapore in a couple of weeks’ time which is excellent,” he said.
He just needs to improve his ranking by just four places and he will make it to the field of the DP World Tour Championship.
With five tournaments left on the European Tour prior to start of the event in Dubai, the 37-year-old needs at least one top-10 finish, in order to make his debut in the event.
For the last three editions of the tournament, he has been giving his expert opinions from the Sky Sports TV studio. This year, the former Ryder Cup star may allow his clubs to do the talking on the course.
“Everyone who knows me knows I've really been gunning to get into the DP World Tour Championship this year,” said Howell.
Alejandro Cañizares is another player who managed what Howell is actually trying to achieve. The Spaniard finished third in Australia and pocketed €96,374 prize money.
As a result, he moved from the 70th position to the 55th spot in The Race to Dubai, which he now plans to retain till the end of the SA Open Championship, next month.
He also participated in the event last year and recorded an average finish – he took the 46th spot on the leaderboard.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he stated that he was really pleased to book a place in the tournament to be held in Singapore.
“I didn't have that tournament on my schedule before last week because of my ranking so I am more than happy to be able to get there on my own merit,” Cañizares said. “It helps me a lot and ...hopefully play in Dubai at the end of the year”.
