David Howell hopeful to make the cut at Avantha Masters – Golf News
David Howell shot level par score in the opening round of the Avantha Masters to brighten up his chances of making the cut at the DLF Golf and Country Club, Delhi on Thursday, February 16, 2012.
Howell’s start was not a good one as he made two bogeys on the third and fifth holes and went two over par. However, his birdies on the ninth and tenth were enough to offset his bogeys.
He said that he was satisfied with how he ended and started front and back nine, respectively. Moreover, they also gave him some confidence to play even better in the remaining holes of the round.
Yet, he failed to maintain his consistency and bogeyed on the par-four 15th but again birdied to end his round.
He was standing at the 47th spot on the leaderboard when all the 131 players finished their rounds on day one.
Spain's Alejandro Canizares and Peter Whiteford of Scotland both fired a six-under par 66 to share the top position in the richest golf event in India. Italy’s Federico Colombo was a further shot behind to take the third spot.
Canizares appeared to be in high spirits throughout the day and said that he was pleased with his debut performance in any event in India.
He is now looking forward to registering his second European Tour win at the Avantha Masters.
“I played very steady and I putted quite nicely,” said Canizares, a one-time European Tour winner. “The only mistake I made was missing a short putt on the seventh so I made a bogey. But overall it was a nice round with not many mistakes”.
The spotlight of the day was the two-time major winner, John Daly, who, according to him, tore his elbow ligaments while playing his ninth hole on the course. Therefore, he failed to impress his fans and finished at seven-over par 79.
“Messed it (elbow) up pretty bad---getting home to see a specialist asap,” he posted late on Twitter, although there was no confirmation about his withdrawal.
Another tweet followed, “No bones are broken, possible torn ligaments... Back 9 painful --hit a root coming down on #9 & snapped my elbow!”
Later in the evening, he confirmed that he withdrew from the tournament in order to get proper treatment at his home country.
