David Huff’s pitching helps Cleveland Indians defeat Minnesota Twins 5-2 - Game 1 – MLB Recap
Cleveland Indians’ starter, David Huff had a remarkable day with the ball as he gifted just five hits without giving any run in his seven inning pitches and gave the Indians a 5-2 victory against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field, Minnesota on July 18.
Michael Brantley flied out to right-field and Travis Hafner also flied out towards centre-field during the top of the first inning. Similarly, the Twins’ batters were also unable to get runs as Ben Revere was grounded out to pitcher and Michael Cuddyer struck-out
swinging at the bottom of the first inning.
Second inning also went in favour of the starters as they threw perfectly and got out batters. Carlos Santana singled off right-centre but Matt LaPorta was struck-out swinging and Luis Valbuena flied out to left-field at the top of the second inning. The
Twins’ batters also got out at the bottom of the second inning without providing any run.
In the third inning, the Indians’ batters gave their team a 4-0 lead by blasting four quick runs. Ezequiel Carrera singled off centre-field and Lonnie Chisenhall posted the first run for the Indians. Later on, Asdrubal Cabrera struck a three-run homer (381
feet) towards right-field while Carrera and Brantley scored two collective runs to end the four-run campaign.
The pitchers restricted the runs of the batters from the fourth to the eighth inning by pitching at their feet. Huff permitted two walks and had five strike-outs on his 88 pitches. He commented on his game and said, “With the conditions the way they were,
no one wants to be out there any longer than they have to. So, you just have to go strike one, strike two and make them swing the bat.”
At the top of the ninth inning, the Indians scored one run while the Twins opened their scoring account at the bottom of the ninth by exploding two runs and reduced their lead 5-2. Austin Kearns hit a solo homer (380 feet) towards left-field to raise the
Indians’ lead. On the other hand, Cuddyer struck a two-run homer (384 feet) to left-field and Joe Mauer contributed the last run for the Twins.
With this tremendous win, the Indians took a 1-0 lead in a four-game series played at Target Field.
