David Lipsky records a strong finish at the Mercuries Taiwan Masters
David Lipsky of the United States rode the roller coaster of luck in the final round of the Mercuries Taiwan Masters. He made a strong charge on the leaderboard for a tied third place, on Sunday, September 30, 2012.
Lipsky carded a five-under par 67, the best performance of the day, and joined Chan Yih-Shin with a one-over par tournament score.
The American turned professional after graduating from the Northwestern University last year. This year, he won the Asian Tour Qualifying School and earned the full-time playing card for Asia’s elite tour.
In his third professional start on the Asian Tour, he proved his mettle by winning the 2012 Handa Faldo Cambodian Classic in the playoffs.
Therefore, he was no doubt one of the best players in the field, contending for the US$ 600,000 prize purse.
His start to the event was a good one, as he carded an even-par 72, in difficult playing conditions at the Taiwan Golf & Country Club.
During the second round, he started making mistakes and posted a two-over par 74. On Saturday, the playing conditions became even worse, when the strong winds covered the area.
Therefore, it became really difficult for the players to shoot low scores. Lipsky, in the meantime, also recorded a poor score of four-over par 76.
Entering the final round, he was not expecting even a top-10 finish. However, luck was on his side on day four, as he posted an impressive five-under par score through 11 holes.
The 12th hole witnessed him lose a shot, which he squared with a birdie on the 16th. At the end of the tournament, he found himself among the top three players on the leaderboard.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, he stated that he continued playing his natural game on Sunday and there was nothing that he changed in his playing technique.
However, the end scores were completely different to what they were in the first three rounds. According to him, it was luck, which helped him post a decent score for another good finish on the tour.
“Honestly, I played the same as the first two days. It was all luck for me. I had the good bounces and had nice birdie chances. It is nice to play well and I’m looking forward to the next Asian Tour events,” said the 24-year-old Lipsky.
