David Lipsky takes clubhouse lead at the Iskandar Johor Open
David Lipsky of the United States carded an eight-under par score, midway through the opening round of the Asian Tour’s season-ending Iskandar Johor Open, to take a one-stroke lead, on Thursday, December 13, 2012.
The tournament is being played at the Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club, where a total of 120 players are contending against each other for a prize purse of US$2 million.
Starting on the 10th hole, the Asian Tour rookie carded birdies on the 11th and the 12th hole. He then added three straight birdies to his scorecard, staring from the 16th hole.
Thereafter, he maintained his form and drained birdie putts on the first and the fourth hole, before adding pars on the next three holes.
Entering the eighth hole, his seventeenth, he was eight-under for the round. However, the inclement weather did not allow him to complete his round.
At the end of the day, a total of 84 players returned to the clubhouse without completing their first rounds. All of them will return to the course early in the morning on Friday, in order to compete their opening-round campaigns.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, Lipsky expressed his disappointment in leaving the field, especially when he was performing at his best.
His tee shot on the par-three eighth hole landed just two feet away from the pin. Therefore, he had a great chance to tap in the ball for a birdie. However, the strong winds forced him to return to the clubhouse.
“I had a two-footer for birdie and I was looking to make that and finish the round strong. I just made like three pars in a row before the delay so it didn’t stop any momentum. I would have preferred to sleep in but you can’t do anything about these weather
conditions,” said Lipsky.
Unho Park, in the meantime, carded a bogey-free seven-under par 65, to take the second position on the leaderboard.
The current Asian Tour Order of Merit leader, Thaworn Wiratchant registered a one-under par score though 17 holes, to take the share of the 28th position.
