David Luiz uncertain of his future
David Luiz, the Benfica defender, admitted that he was not sure of his future. The player is most probably set to leave in the upcoming January transfer window and said he was certain where he would be playing next year. This has increased speculation that
Luiz will probably make a move to English Premier League sides Manchester City or Chelsea.
Sources reveal that Manchester City bid €32 million for the 23-year-old defender during the summer; however the offer was rejected by Benfica. The Benfica chairman Luis Filipe Vieira said he would not accept anything less that €50 million for the youngster,
which was the amount mentioned in his termination clause.
Premier League champions Chelsea also expressed interest in the player in the summer, however Carlo Ancelotti was not willing to spend that much. Roman Abramovich, the Chelsea owner, warned the Italian manager not to spend too much over the summer. That
explains why Ancelotti only bought Yossi Benayoun and Ramires during the summer transfer window.
However, with the departure of Ricardo Carvalho and due to the long term injuries to Captain John Terry and Alex, the Blues are suffering. There may now be a possibility that Chelsea will be willing to spend the cash on Luiz. The young defender’s contract
with Benfica expires in the 2014-2015 season; however, it will be hoped by both Manchester City and Chelsea that Vieira changes his demands.
The defender refused to sign a new deal with Benfica, who were just recently knocked out of the Champions League. Luiz said while speaking to reporters,
“My future, only God knows. I do not know where I will be in January, in the summer or in 2015. The rumors from England? I know that and I follow them, but this does not depend on me.”
Luiz was not happy with the criticism he has received recently, he defended himself by saying,
“I refused another renewal because I have a contract until June 2015 and am happy here. I have a clear conscience. If it were only a matter of money, I would not be at Benfica. Criticism hurts me but my mission is to work every day.”
