David Mathis leads The Travelers Championship after round one
Before the start of the tournament, who would have thought that David Mathis would be leading the Travelers Championship?
Mathis, who has played 19 events this season and managed the cut in only 7 of them, had only one top-ten finish this season.
Mathis missed the cut in the first 10 of his 12 appearances. He then went on to play at Valero Texas Open, where he finished 18th.
From Valero Texas, he went on to play at New Orleans. He improved his performance and finished 10th and then went on the make cut in the last two of the eight tournaments in which he featured.
Nobody would have thought that the man from Wake Forest will be the leader at TPC River Highlands, but he surely deserves to be at the top.
Mathis scored a hole in one on the 11th hole and shot a 6-under par 64 at the end of round one.
Mathis teed off from the back nine. He birdied on the 3rd, 9th, 10th, 12th, 14th, and 15th hole but he also bogeyed the 8th and the 18th hole.
The highlight of the day was when Mathis aced the 11th hole. It was no doubt the shot of the day. Mathis said that he was only trying to land the ball just near the pin and luckily his idea paid off, the ball went straight into the hole.
At the moment, David Mathis stands alone atop of the leaderboard. There are three players who are a shot behind him, Nathan Green, Claxton and the defending champion Fredrik Jacobson.
Mathis’ lead may be a slender one but he is still leading. In order to remain on the top, he must show the same temperament and skills to able to beat the likes of Bubba Watson, Matt Kuchar, and Keegan Bradley.
A title at the 2012 Travelers Championship, being played at the TPC River Highlands, would not only enable him to take home his first title, but also a million dollar check, which will surely turn his fortunes.
Wishing Mathis all the luck for the next rounds, hopefully he will do well.
