David May denies claims of taunting Manchester City
Former Manchester United defender David May has denied claims that he was taunting Manchester City with a special fundraising event. May came under fire for his earlier comments, in which he claimed that those who attended the event would also be celebrating
Manchester City’s 35-year trophy drought.
May now insists that his remarks were meant to be a joke. However, the controversy surrounding the fundraiser has forced the former Manchester United man to cancel to the event. He expressed his disappointment at having to cancel the fundraiser, the proceeds
of which would have been split between two charities.
May said, “It was never a party to celebrate City's 35 years without winning any silverware. That mention was just a bit of banter. It's disappointing because the majority of the proceeds were going to Christie Hospital (a charity for cancer patients) and
the United Foundation.”
United and City are set to face each other in the Manchester derby on Saturday, 12th February. It is one the most important matches of the Barclays Premier League this season, and fans from all over the world have travelled to the city of Manchester
to witness the spectacle that is the Manchester derby. May was looking to utilise the popularity of the upcoming fixture to raise money for charity.
May said, “It was an event for United fans from all over the world who were visiting for the derby. We raffle signed shirts, signed footballs and pictures and have auctions and most of the money raised goes to charity.”
He added, “My biggest gripe is that the charity won't benefit now and people have jumped on the bandwagon and said I hate (Manchester) City which is totally wrong.”
David May’s comments against Manchester City will have made the Citizens even more determined to pick up all three points when they face bitter rivals Manchester United on Saturday. If the Sky Blues can pull off a win against the Red Devils, they will climb
to within two points of the leaders, throwing the title race wide open once more.
