David McKeon earns Men’s 400m freestyle gold: Day one – EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships
David McKeon of Wests Illawarra earned the crown of Men’s 400m freestyle on opening day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide on Thursday, March 15.
The 19-year-old McKeon upset his challengers by asserting his dominance on the medal rostrum for gold medal of the mediocre distant freestyle event.
McKeon experienced strong contest from Ryan Napoleon of St Peters Western Swimming Club in the 400m swim but with his strong determination, he managed to outperform him on the finishing end for gold medal.
The 21-year-old Napoleon showed his quickest response to the start and completed his first round of the swim in a top time of 54.22 seconds. His fascinating swim placed him in a lead of 0.27 seconds over McKeon, who covered the same with the timing of 54.49
seconds.
Napoleon continued his alarming efforts in the second round of the race, where he sustained his pace and ended his initial half with the timing of 1 minute and 51.33 seconds. In contrast, McKeon stayed 0.65 seconds slower from his former swimmer and concluded
his 200 metres of the race by touching the wall in a time of 1 minute and 51.98 seconds.
With his continuous efforts, Napoleon went full throttle in the third round and posted an effort of 2 minutes and 48.93 seconds. He stayed only 0.38 seconds ahead of McKeon, who enveloped the same distance by hitting the wall with the timing of 2 minutes
and 49.31 seconds.
Subsequently, McKeon elevated his efforts in the last two laps of the race, where he overpowered Napoleon and proved his supremacy for gold medal by producing an effort of 3 minutes and 46.36 seconds.
With his impeccable effort in the final lap, McKeon enjoyed an advantage of 1.57 seconds over Napoleon, who reported 3 minutes and 47.93 seconds for silver medal. The third position of the event was occupied by Robert Hurley of SOPAC, who ended his swim
in a time of 3 minutes and 48.60.
In addition, McKeon aroused expectations of his supporters by claiming that he will make his country proud at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
