David Moss gets game winner as Calgary Flames shutouts St. Louis Blues in a tight 1-0 encounter
Calgary moved up in the Western Conference on Sunday night as it defeated St. Louis Blues in a thrilling 1-0 matchup, which continued until the final moments of the final period. Over 19,000 fans were on the edge of their seats at the Scotiabank Saddledome,
in Calgary, Alberta, knowing it was a do or die situation for Calgary Flames.
Only Calgary and Los Angeles Kings are the two teams to squeeze out of a tight Western Conference race to the playoffs, with all teams looking at a playoff spot, four teams remain tied at 72 points.
It was all Miikka Kiprusoff who made St. Louis Blues’ 27 shot attempts fruitless right till the final buzzer.
David Moss was able to save his team from going into an uncertain overtime when Alex Tanguay took advantage of the blunders which St. Louis Blues’ defensemen made and passed it to Moss who snap shot it through the humongous Ben Bishop at the 05:39 mark in
the final period. It was his 15th goal of the season.
Carlo Colaiacovo and Tyson Strachan were responsible for the mishap as the former was unable to control a deep pass from Strachan into his own end, making way for Tanguay to snatch the puck.
St. Louis tried hard to recover during the closing moments of the match and came very close to doing so within the last 3 minutes.
Blues centre, Brad Boyes, thought he had tied it up, but St. Louis Blues’ rejoicing was brief as referee, Dan O'Rourke, termed it illegal, citing David Backes knocking the puck out of the air with a high stick.
Calgary could finally breathe, but was appalled under a minute later when Patrick Berglund fired it from the circle beating Kiprusoff, unfortunately striking the net post.
Kiprusoff was all smiles after that close call.
Calgary Flames is now finished with its home-game rest, after playing five with a 3-1-1 record. It is now sole occupier of the 6th spot in the Western Conference.
Calgary starts its road trip by meeting St. Louis Blues once again on Tuesday, this time in Blues’ home town.
