David Moyes after drawing with Chelsea: “We didn’t get more”
Everton FC held English champions Chelsea FC to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on Saturday in the English Premier League.
Everton manager David Moyes was considerably pleased with his side’s fighting spirit against Chelsea, but said that he could have won the tie in the closing moments of the match.
In a post-match interview Moyes said, “We needed to show a bit of determination, a bit of guts and we certainly showed that. We had to hang on a bit in the first half but we gave away a really poor goal. But I thought in the second
half we had the better of it and are a little bit disappointed that we didn't get more. But a draw here isn't a bad result."
The home side had a nervous start to the game, before they were awarded a penalty on 41st
minute. Didier Drogba took the spot-kick responsibilities in the absence of Frank Lampard and converted successfully to give Chelsea a 1-0 lead.
The Blues were close to getting their first win in 4 premier league matches when Everton’s substitute striker Jermaine Beckford scored from a header in the 86th minute to stun the home crowd.
The Toffees came to the Bridge on the back of a humiliating 4-1 home defeat, which they suffered at the hands of West Bromwich Albion last week.
Talking about the comeback, David said, “If you saw our standards last week they were really low and what I needed to see was an improvement in the players. I thought we got that, they were back to being a bit like Everton and
we have to keep doing that if we are to climb the table. Maybe after that we can start talking about the quality and what we have to do better.”
Everton are now 15th in the table after scoring 18 points from 16 games. However, the Toffees could slip a place further if 16th place Aston Villa manage to avoid defeat against Liverpool FC on Monday.
The draw leaves Chelsea in 3rd place, 2 points behind current leaders Arsenal FC, who beat Fulham FC in a 2-1 home win at The Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
However, this gap at the top of the league could be stretched to 4 points if Manchester United win their fixture against Blackpool FC.
United’s match, that was due to be played on Saturday, could not go on after the referee called the match off due to poor pitch condition.
The west-Londoners will make a trip to the north of the city to face Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane, next week.
