David Moyes commends his players’ resilient performance against Manchester City
Everton FC manager David Moyes has saluted the grit and fighting spirit of his players during the 2-1 win against Manchester City on Monday night.
The match was played at The City of Manchester Stadium, where the Toffees had not lost a point in their past three visits.
The Merseysiders made it 4 wins in a row at Eastlands and ruined City’s hope of claiming top spot in the English Premier League table before Christmas.
Everton took a two-goal lead in the 1st half through Australian midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Leighton-Baines-c21987.
However, the Blues went a man down in the 2nd half when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Victor-Anichebe-c36018 was shown a 2nd yellow by the referee.
City did manage to pull one back in the 72nd minute, but it proved to be only a consolation goal and the match ended in a 2-1 score line.
David Moyes seemed pleased with his side’s resolute defending against the Citizens who had a man-advantage in the 2nd half.
He said, “The resilience and competitiveness of the team were excellent. When we went down to 10 men I thought the evening was going to become even longer but we did a great job. It was the art of defending; blocking shots,
getting in the way of things. And the goalkeeper did well, making some terrific saves.”
Now, Moyes is hoping that he will be able to keep his players feet on the ground and build on the victory in Manchester.
The Scot believes that his team are always up to the task when it comes to playing the big teams. However, the Toffees are let down by their performances against the lower lying teams in the Premiership.
The former Preston North End boss said, “We can compete at the top end but we haven't been able to compete at the bottom. We haven't been able to beat the teams below us, especially at Goodison.
But when it's come to the bigger games we seem to respond to the challenge and we are a match for a lot of teams.”
Monday’s win takes Everton to 14th place in the table with 21 points from 18 games. Their next fixture is at Goodison Park against Birmingham City FC on the Boxing Day.
