David Nalbandian all geared up for the Davis Cup quarter-final tie against Croatia – Tennis News
Former world number three, David Nalbandian of Argentina, is all geared up to hunt down the Croatians in the Davis Cup quarter-final tie this weekend. The Croat visitors will face the Argentines on their home soil at the Parque
Roca in Buenos Aires on Friday to earn a place in the coveted Davis Cup semi-final.
The quarter-final tie will be played on the outdoor clay courts and Nalbandian will take off the proceedings from his side. Currently holding the 50th spot in the men’s rankings, the Argentine veteran will play the opening
singles rubber against the Croatian number one, Marin Cilic, on Friday and then take on Ivo Karlovic in the fifth and final singles encounter on Sunday.
The 30-year-old Argentine is very optimistic about the quarter-final campaign and is very eager to take on the visitors with aggression. Nalbandian desires to register victory right away to give his side an early advantage in the
tie. He has already faced Cilic four times before and has defeated the 23rd ranked Croat on all prior occurrences. His head-to-head record against Cilic has boosted the hopes of Argentine fans and Nalbandian himself, making him the hot favourite
for winning the opening rubber.
“It’s going to be great. We really enjoy playing in front of our own crowd. It’s always special to play here,” said Nalbandian. “Every match is different. But of course, when you have already played against a guy it’s better because
you know what to do, what are his best shots.”
Cilic is also very confident about the upcoming battle and stated that his previous losses to Nalbandian are history now and he is not intimidated by the Argentine.
“I think the record doesn’t matter too much. We played a few weeks ago, and it was a close match. It’s going to be really entertaining for the crowd and a big challenge for me to play against him in front of his own crowd, where
he plays the best,” said Cilic.
The strong Argentine squad is being led by the current world number 10, Juan Martin Del Potro, accompanied by 16th ranked Juan Monaco and Eduardo Schwank. Cilic will lead the pack of Karlovic, Antonio Veic and Lovro
Zovko in the quarter-final.
