David Nalbandian enters Sony Ericsson Open with a wild-card – Tennis News
Argentine tennis icon, David Nalbandian will play at Miami in March as a wildcard entrant. This announcement was made by the tournament officials of Sony Ericsson Open on Thursday in a press conference.
Two other big guns from the world of tennis received the wild-cards to play in the tournament; that includes the American tennis icon, Venus Williams and the former World Number five, Fernando Gonzalez of Chile.
On the announcement of his inclusion in the tournament, Nalbandian said, “I’m very happy to play the 2012 Sony Ericsson Open. Miami has always been one of my favourite tournaments in the tour, so I cannot wait to be in Key Biscayne in March.”
Nalbandian kicked-off his New Year at Kooyong, playing AAMI Classic. He lost in the opening match against the Briton, Andy Murray. The Australian Open campaign for the Argentine was also disappointing considering his controversial second round exit at the
hands of the American tennis ace, John Isner. He won the singles rubbers match against the German contestant, Florian Mayer, in the Davis Cup; reached the quarter-final stage of the Brasil Open but lost to the Italian contender, Filippo Volandri, in a gruelling
three-setter. Currently he is playing in at his home soil in the Copa Claro. He has won the opening two rounds and progresses to the third round of any tournament for the second time in 2012.
Williams also received the wild-card for the tournament and was ecstatic on the announcement. She said, “I am looking forward to my return to competitive tennis at the Sony Ericsson Open. I have spent most of my life in Southern Florida and view the Sony
Ericsson Open as a hometown event. I have had many great experiences playing there and look forward to returning in the coming weeks.”
Nalbandian has won 11 Association of Tennis Professional (ATP) World Tour Titles in his professional tennis career and climbed to the number three spot in the World rankings in 2006. With his inclusion, the main round draw has definitely made it interesting
and will get greater viewership especially from the Argentinean fans.
