David Nalbandian finishes at number 82 in 2012 ATP Year-End Rankings – Tennis News
Former world number three, David Nalbandian, suffered a terrible slump of form towards the end of the 2012 ATP season and has eventually finished at the 82nd position this year. He was on his way to redeem his lost glory
this season and was going quite decently a couple of months back. However, a sudden drop of form was seen in his game play and the Argentines slipped down multiple places by the end of the year.
30-year-old Nalbandian started off the 2012 ATP World Tour as the 64th ranked contender and kept labouring extremely hard to get back in form. He showed his vintage consistency and rose to the world number 38 position
in the second week of August. All of his hard work was wasted by his niggling injuries and he had to pull out of the professional circuit for the rest of the year.
Entering into his 30’s this year, Nalbandian’s fitness problems have increased a lot. Albeit of his tireless efforts to remain at his 100 per cent, the Argentine is often struck with injuries on the tennis courts. It is something
very disappointing for a player of his calibre and it is the only reason has not been able to reclaim the Top-5 rank for the past few years.
Nalbandian played a total of 38 matches this year, winning 21 out of them and failing to claim a single ATP championship title. His come-back voyage this season has not been an easier one but the crafty right-hander didn’t give
away hope. He started the 2012 season from the Australian Open but was ejected in the second round. A quarter-final appearance in Sao Paulo and a semi-final run in Buenos Aires were followed by a opening round defeat in Acapulco.
The Argentinean featured the quarter-finals of Indian Wells Masters and then a semi-final finish at Belgrade pushed him into the Top-50. He then had to suffer early exits from the tournaments to follow, including the Roland Garros,
but his controversial loss in final of AEGON Tennis Championships at Queen’s Club took him to the world number 38 rank.
Nalbandian took a downward turn from there onwards and faced opening-round defeats in four successive tournaments to follow. His last played event was Winston-Salem, where he lost in the third round before sidelining for the rest
of the season. The former world number three is now on road to recovery and is preparing for the Copa Peugeot tournament, from 6th to 9th of December 2012.
