David Nalbandian might snub the Australian Open 2013 event – Tennis News
World number 82, David Nalbandian, had a topsy turvy season in the year 2012. He was surrounded by controversies but still managed to absorb the pressure and pulled out some remarkable match victories that helped him to regain
some momentum. However, the finish to the season was very poor from the 30-year-old Argentine, who witnessed a peak of his form in 2006 when he reached his career best ranking of world number three.
After a controversial season that witnessed some formidable moments for the Argentine, he has reached another dilemma. He might not chose to play the year’s first Grand Slam Championship, the Australian Open, in January in order
to prepare for the Davis Cup tie that will take place from 1st-3rd February at Buenos Aires against the versatile and tough German squad. In a press release, Nalbandian proclaimed, “I'll do the pre-season and next year I'll be fully fit.
I have to decide on participation in Australian Open. And I'm going to play the South American swing.”
Nalbandian doesn’t have a favourable memory from this year’s edition of the Australian Open where he was stripped of the correct replay call that was turned down by the chair umpire for the very ordinary reason of late announcement.
He was playing the second round match against the 6’2 tall American star, John Isner. It was the fifth set of the match and the most crucial point that tilted the 18th game of the set in favour of Isner. The scores for the match were 4-6, 6-3, 2-6,
7-6(5), 10-8. After a terrible decision that led to the loss, the 30-year-old Argentine lost his cool and was accused to have spilt water on the official of the Australian Open on his way back to the dressing room.
The second controversy took place at the final of the AEGON Championships in London where the Argentine was leading the match by one set and just 3-4 down in the second phase against the sixth seed Croatian star, Marin Cilic. He
lost a point courtesy to a terrible shot selection and kicked the advertisement hoardings that in turn injured the linesman. He was stripped of all the points from the contest, fined and disqualified from the match as well.
Some harsh decisions coupled with the Davis Cup factor might force the Argentine to snub the Australian Open. However, the final decision is still awaited at the moment. It is quite possible that he chose to be a part of the Australian
Open and forego the opportunity to represent his country in the Davis Cup ties.
