David Nalbandian will participate at the Wimbledon Championships – Tennis News
Former world number three, David Nalbandian of Argentina, has stated that he would take part in this year’s Wimbledon Championships.
Nalbandian’s representative, Bernado Ballero, said, "I can confirm to you that David's thoughts are about playing at Wimbledon."
The Argentinean was disqualified from his AEGON Championships final at the Queen’s Club for injuring a line judge. He kicked a three sided sponsor board which was surrounding the lineman and it struck the his shin, causing bleeding.
Nalbandian was also deprived from his £36,500 runner up prize money and 150 Ranking points. The Argentinean has been fined 10, 000 Euros, which is the maximum penalty for unsportsmanlike behaviour. It is important to note that
Nalbandian was leading one set to love when this sad incident took place.
An ATP’s spokeswoman said, "Nalbandian automatically forfeited his prize money and ranking points due to his conduct default. A maximum 10,000 euro fine also was issued onsite by the ATP Supervisor for unsportsmanlike conduct."
Police also confirmed on Monday that a complaint has been lodged against Nalbandian for alleged assault and they are investigating it.
A spokesperson of Scotland Yard said, "We are aware of an incident at the AEGON Championships on June 17. A complaint has been made and the Metropolitan Police Service is now investigating. The allegation is of assault."
Nalbandian has already issued an apology for the incident. He said that he is sorry and regret the incident but it was not intentional. The Argentinean added that it was an unfortunate reaction from his side in which he wanted
to relieve his anger of losing a crucial point. He also stated that he personally apologised to the injured line judge for the unfortunate incident.
The Argentinean is hoping to give a good performance at the Wimbledon Championships, which is his favourite Grand Slam. The 30-year-old has a 19-7 win/loss on the only Major which is held on grass courts. Nalbandian reached the
title match at the All England Club when he featured there for the very first time, losing to the then world number one, Lleyton Hewitt of Australia.
After getting stunned by the former British number one, Tim Henman, in the round of 16 in 2003, Nalbandian gave a good showing again in 2005, when he advanced to the last eight. The Argentinean was beaten by the Swiss Maestro,
Roger Federer, in straight sets 4-6, 2-6, 4-6 in the third round last year.
