David O'Brien: Paraparaumu Beach GC hates substandard skill
The Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club may look appealing from the outside, but it sure as well is a nightmare for those who miss the fairways.
The 2010 men's interprovincial golf championship commenced from the 7th of December to end on the 10th and witnessed the Waikato team having a rather tough time with the course.
According to latest reports, the initial round for the interprovincial championship proved to be a tough stint for the team for which now, the team has to display an overwhelming form.
According to David O'Brien who is the manager of Waikato, the players had been highly inconsistent with their performance since the golfers failed to understand the course and its layout which had gone rather hard on them in return.
Regarding the Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club course, O'Brien said that its all about treading carefully at the GC. He said that in order to grab a lower score from this serene terra firma, the only thing the golfers need to do is
to avoid the rough as much as they can.
From what the manager has stated, it seems like he has spoken from experience. The only reason O'Brien advised the golfers to focus on the fairways more is because the Waikato failed to do so and once the ball enters the roughs,
it becomes nearly impossible for the golfers to achieve high scores, which leads to inconsistency.
With four matches left to decide their fate, the team will probably have to win them all.
At the first round of the event, the team stood tied with Taranaki and bagged one point over initially. Later that day however, the team couldn’t fight the rough anymore and was whacked out later by team Manawatu/Wanganui at a
4.5-0.5.
“The course is nice but the roughs are rather strenuous” O'Brien said.
Explaining what went wrong from the team’s side, the manager explained that the ball didn’t favour the fairways at all. So with the team unable to attack the fairways, the fight turned a bit defensive. O'Brien said that the Paraparaumu
GC is a highly testing field for the golfers and for those who want to check their skill level, it’s a good place to start. The Waikato manager said that the consequence can either be gratifying, owing to a good play or castigated for being sub standard.
With the penultimate and ultimate round all ending on Saturday, team Waikato needs to turn up the gear and maintain a more attacking strategy for the Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club course. The section play ends on Friday.
