David Ortiz, Jonathan Papelbon eyeing return to Boston Red Sox – MLB News

With manager Terry Francona gone, Boston Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein has expressed his desire to have free agents David Ortiz and Jonathan Papelbon back in the team for 2012 at least.
Although the consideration is quite premature, the management cannot afford to release two of the highest quality players in the roster to further dent the unity of the team. Epstein commended their contributions to the overall success of the team and emphasised
the duo’s importance as leaders.
Epstein said, "I can't say too much about that now except the general and the obvious that we'd love to have both guys back if there's a way to do that."
Having said this, it is certain that neither of these players will be an easy buy and the team will have to spend excessively to retain their services. Papelbon was paid 12-million-dollars in 2011 while the hard-hitting Ortiz made 12.5-million-dollars during
this season.
Ortiz smashed 29 home-runs in the season in addition to producing 96 RBIs at an impressive batting average of .309. He clarified his intent of signing a long-term contract with the Red Sox and the amount, needless to say, will be significantly high. Although
on the wrong side of 30, Ortiz was the American League home-run derby captain this year and rightly proved his abilities as a leader and hitter.
Epstein agreed with Ortiz’s importance for the team and emphasised that that the All-Star slugger has been an influential figure for the ballclub for a long time. The general manager signalled that the management is content with re-signing Ortiz, but budget
might have the last say in this matter.
Papelbon, on the contrary, became the first pitcher in the history of Major League Baseball to record 30-plus saves in his first six seasons. He bagged 31 saves this season, but the infamous blown save against Baltimore Orioles on September 28, saw his team
crash out of the play-offs.
The closer expressed that he would not let that performance affect his career and future commitments. He remained confident on returning to the Red Sox after Epstein commended his performance during the season and appreciated his leadership skills.
