David Ortiz shines as Boston Red Sox hammer Miami Marlins 15-5 – MLB Update
David Ortiz’s grand slam highlighted the offensive explosion as Boston Red Sox hammered the Miami Marlins 15-5 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Wednesday, June 20 in the second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball
regular season.
After the Marlins took an early 2-0 lead, the Red Sox regrouped themselves to stage an emphatic comeback. Mike Aviles hit a three run home run to left centre in the second inning to put the Rays 3-2 ahead. With basis loaded, Cody Ross doubled to left to
extend Boston’s lead to 6-2 in the third inning.
"Hitting is definitely contagious and so is winning," Aviles said. "Any time you get a couple of wins together you just get that good confidence going and you just keep rolling with it and that's where we're at right now."
"Guys are just getting on base left and right," Ross said. "We're coming up with big hits. Red Sox baseball."
David Ortiz looked in extremely dangerous form as he hit a grand slam in the fourth inning to shut the doors on Marlins.
"I don't get many opportunities (with pitches) over the plate," he said. "I just try to be patient for that one pitch they give me to hit."
Jarrod Saltalamacchia also made the most of available opportunities, adding a solo home run to centre in the fourth and Will Middlebrooks homered to left in the eighth to wrap up an impressive victory for his side.
Starting pitcher Felix Doubront beat the Marlins for the 12th time in 14 games as he allowed just four runs and nine hits in six solid innings. His counterpart from the Marlins Ricky Nolasco went for nine runs and nine hits in just over three
innings.
"The weather warmed up a little. Guys felt loose," Boston manager Bobby Valentine said.
With their win on Wednesday, the Red Sox extended their winning streak to 4 games. Right now, Bobby Valentine and company are six games behind the American League East Division leaders New York Yankees and it will be exciting to see if they can sweep the
Marlins in this series to get 4 games ahead of .500 win percentage mark.
