David Ortiz wants to be with Boston Red Sox – MLB News
The Boston Red Sox veteran David Ortiz does not intend to leave his team come what may. On Thursday, October 20 Ortiz expressed his desire to come back at a time when the team is marred by confusion and controversy.
The biggest issue to deal with, first and foremost, is the installation of a new manager and general manager. For now, both of these slots are lying unfilled. Although intensive talks are underway to immediately sort out this puzzle, the fate of players’
is still undecided.
Ortiz was rumoured to be considering leaving the Boston Red Sox after Terry Francona left the team following the hardly expected outcome of the Major League season. The Red Sox collapsed just when it seemed all poised to make it into the American League
Division Series.
However on Thursday, he clearly stated he would like to come back as soon as the manager and GM issue is solved. Ortiz batted .309 this season in which he had 29 odd home-runs coupled with 96 RBIs. His five year contract has almost come to an end with the
Boston Red Sox now.
His announcement to join the team is significant because he rejected any idea he would sign any deal with the New York Yankees.
"I never said I would sign with the Yankees. No, don't be making [stuff] up," Ortiz said.
On Thursday, he received Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet as well for which he said he was incredibly honoured.
"I am incredibly honored to be the recipient of this year's award," Ortiz said. "It's humbling to be associated with all the tremendous names that have won this award in the past, and I look forward to continuing to do my part to maintain Roberto Clemente's
legacy."
The Boston Red Sox, while dealing with the issue of filling the manager and general manager positions, is expediting the process to sign contracts with the players before it is too late.
The team will be looking to retain players like Ortiz as they make up the backbone of the batting line up in the team. Amid all of the confusion going on with the Red Sox right now, it will be interesting to see how they approach the issue of keeping the
talented Ortiz in their squad for the regular season.
