David Phelps helps New York Yankees rout Seattle Mariners 5-2 at Safeco Field – MLB Update
New York Yankees defeated the Seattle Mariners 5-2 at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington on Wednesday, July 25 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Starting pitcher Ivan Nova was lucky to avoid the loss after he left his team trailing 1-2 in the fifth inning. Nova, who has given some impressive results over the last few weeks, struck-out five batters.
Relief pitcher David Phelps struck-out two in a scoreless 1.1 inning to help the Yankees find an entry back into the contest. Rafael Soriano gave up just a hit in the ninth to make his 26th save of the season.
Derek Jeter homered to left in the first inning to provide Yankees with the early momentum. Designated hitter Jayson Nix doubled to deep left-centre and catcher Russell Martin singled left in the eighth and the Yankees came back from behind to register an
emphatic win on Wednesday.
"After losing five games by a total of six runs, to be able to win a series going into an off day was important," Girardi said. "Two-and-five is not what we want on a road trip, but we won the second series and it'll be a happier flight home."
"We kind of struggled all day to get something going and it feels good to come through," Nix said in a post game interview. "Whenever I get my chances, whenever they are, I just hope to do something positive and to be able to come through today was good."
The Yankees, who suffered a humiliating series sweep against Oakland Athletics, looked much more comfortable in their series against Seattle. Although Joe Girardi and company were beaten in Game 2, they continued to play aggressively and prevailed on Wednesday
to win the series.
Right now, the Yankees occupying the first place on the American League East Division standings with an incredible 59-39 record. Second placed Tampa Bay Rays are eight games behind and it will not be wrong to say that the Yankees are the favourites to win
this year’s AL East and World Series title.
