David Price: David Haye has got nothing to gain by fighting me – Boxing News
British heavyweight champion David Price is hopeful of a fight against Dereck Chisora next year. After the controversial yet commercially successful match between David Haye and Dereck Chisora, David Price is now in line to get his shot.
“We haven't got a TV deal because Sky have dropped out. Frank [Maloney] is talking to a couple of broadcasters, including BoxNation,” said Price when asked about the possibility of a fight against Chisora.
“In 12 months' time I definitely want to be European champion and knocking on the door of world-class level,” he added.
Although Chisora lost the fight against Haye, he still stands a better chance to face Price, as Haye is thinking of retirement if he is unable to get a shot at Vitali Klitschko, the current WBC heavyweight champion.
On the possibility of facing Haye, Price said, “David Haye's got nothing to gain by fighting me. I'm just British champion and have only had 13 fights. He's a former world champion and he wants to be fighting the very best.”
He added, “A fight with me wouldn't generate any interest worldwide, although it probably would in Britain.”
Dereck Chisora and David Haye went head to head on July 14 at the Upton Park in London. Since neither of them was licensed by the British Board of Boxing Control, the fight was not a sanctioned event. Instead, it was sanctioned by the Luxembourg Boxing Federation.
Although controversial, the fight generated huge buzz and was a highly successful event in terms of pay per view proceedings. Haye knocked out Chisora in the fifth round to win the grudge match. However, the Briton insists he would hang up his gloves if
he is unable to get a title shot against Vitali Klitschko of Ukraine.
Keeping in mind Haye’s demands, it seems like Chisora might be the only British fighter left to fight David Price. On the possibility of facing the Klitschko brothers, David Price believes he still needs to learn a lot before he goes face to face with either
Vitali or Wladimir for the titles.
For now, Chisora is looking forward to apply for a license with the BBBofC to fight David Price next.
