David Price helps Tampa Bay Rays topple Washington Nationals 5-4 – MLB Update
Tampa Bay Rays showed great fighting abilities and determination as they toppled National League East leaders Washington Nationals 5-4 at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C on Tuesday, June 19 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major
League Baseball regular season.
Washington Nationals are having a forgettable time against American League teams this season.
After suffering a humiliating series sweep at the hands of AL East leader New York Yankees, they were hoping to restore some of the lost pride in front of their home crowd but that did not turn out to be the case. David Price pitched with great control and
accuracy to secure his ninth win of the season.
"Joel is using pine tar and had pine tar in his glove," Maddon said. "I'm saying to suggest he's the only one that's doing it is inappropriate. Insider trading, man. It's bush. It's bogus. That's way too easy, right there."
"That's a glove that I use for batting practice every day," Joel Peralta said. "I'm every day playing catch with it, it's hot here -- that's all I'm going to say about it."
Washington, who is still at the top of league standings table with a decent 38-27 record, will be looking to work hard on weak areas of their game play to safeguard their number one position.
B.J. Upton provided the Rays with an excellent start as he singled to left in the first inning and Desmond Jennings scored the first run.
With the Nationals leading 2-1 in the second inning, Carlos Pena hit a mighty 410 feet home run to centre to help the Rays come back from behind to take a 3-2 lead.
"Joel is using pine tar and had pine tar in his glove," Maddon said. "I'm saying to suggest he's the only one that's doing it is inappropriate."
Elliot Johnson also had a decent time on the plate as he tripled to deep centre in the third inning. Nationals’ Michael Morse hit his first home run of the season to reduce Rays’ lead to 5-4 but the effort did not prove to be enough.
