David Price ready to take on Tony Thompson – Boxing News
Briton heavyweight David Price is set to take on two-time world title challenger Tony Thompson. Price, who is an Olympic gold medallist, is already being considered the next big thing in the world of heavyweight boxing. After Lennox Lewis, Price can be the
heavyweight bringing world titles home, only if he reaches the level.
“This is the right fight at the right time for David and one where a win will propel him even higher,” said Price’s promoter Frank Maloney regarding the Briton’s upcoming fight, which is already being considered as his toughest one to date.
“Thompson still has ambition and I am certain that he will come to win and (try to) score a major upset,” he added.
According to Maloney, the bout will take place on February 23 at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, Price’s hometown. It will be a showdown between two of astonishingly great power punchers.
“I definitely want the fight. It's a great fight for Price and a great fight for Tony Thompson,” he added while talking to ESPN.com. “For Price, he can show that he's at that next level if he beats me and for me, when I beat him, I can show that I am not
done. But (Maloney's) matchmakers are undercutting my money.”
“I know the fight is worth more than that, so I'm still trying to negotiate.”
Price currently stands with 15 wins, 0 losses and 13 knockouts in his portfolio. On the other hand, his opponent Thompson stands with 36 wins, 3 losses and 24 knockouts. It should be noted here that Thompson has been knocked out by Wladimir Klitschko in
the heavyweight fights. During the first fight, he was stopped in the 11th round in 2008 while he was stopped in the 6th round this year.
Price is off a win over former world title challenger Audley Harrison. Price was able to end the legendary fighter in the very first round of their October bout. He then faced Matt Skelton last month, defeating him in the second round.
With his recent knockouts over legendary fighters, Price is being considered the only man to end the Klitschko reign.
