David Price shines as Tampa Bay Rays thrash the Baltimore Orioles 10-1 – MLB Update
Tampa Bay Rays thrashed the Baltimore Orioles 10-1 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland on Wednesday, July 25 in second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
After getting the better of Orioles 3-1 in series opener, the Rays continued their excellent work in Game 2 to dent their opponents’ confidence levels. Showing great composure and temperament, the Rays outclassed their American League East Division rivals
in almost all departments of the game.
Rays’ offence, in particular, should be given some credit for converting almost every scoring opportunity. Starting pitcher David Price led the pitching attack superbly to grab his 14th win of the season. Allowing just seven hits and a run with
10 strike-outs, Price made quick work of Baltimore’s offence.
"Our offense has done phenomenal for me all season," Price said. "Got me five runs right off tonight."
"There were a lot of guys who participated well," manager Joe Maddon said, "but at the end of the day it's always about your starting pitcher."
Relief pitchers J.P. Howell and Burke Badenhop also made useful contributions, pitching two scoreless innings.
Desmond Jennings homered to left in the first inning to provide Rays with the perfect start. Carlos Pena, catcher Jose Lobaton and short-stop Elliot Johnson made the most of opportunities in the first inning to put the Rays 4-0 ahead.
Third baseman Ryan Roberts connected for a three run shot in the third and Lobaton hit a three run home-run to right in the fifth to lead the Rays to a much needed win.
"It feels great," Roberts said. "First thing was to get here and try to meet as many people as I can. Try to introduce myself to everybody and fit in. Everybody embraced me and made me feel good. So the first thing was out of the way before the game even
started."
With their win, Joe Maddon and company have now replaced Orioles for second place on the American League East Divisions standings and it will be interesting to see if they can come up with another strong performance in the finale to complete a deserving
series sweep.
