David Price sparks as Tampa Bay Rays defeat New York Yankees 5-1 - MLB Update
Tampa Bay Rays’ starter, David Price had a notable day with the ball as he pitched eight innings with an ERA of 3.76 and had four strike-outs in the Rays’ 5-1 victory against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium, New York on August 12.
In first two innings, the pitchers did not present any run to batters and pitched in a perfect line. During first inning, Rays’ batters looked powerless as at first base, Johnny Damon grounded out and at second base, Evan Longoria grounded out without adding
even a single run.
Similarly, the Yankees also failed in scoring shots during second inning as Nick Swisher struck-out swinging, Andruw Jones struck-out looking and Russell Martin grounded out to short-stop position. Rays added three runs in third inning and took a 3-0 lead.
Casey Kotchman hit a solo homer (355 feet) to right-field and Kelly Shoppach homered (421 feet) to left-field.
Damon struck a one-run homer (345 feet) towards right-field to complete a three-run campaign. Yankees scored one run to shorten their lead 3-1 during fourth inning. Robinson Cano posted a single run when Jones doubled off right-centre and Swisher was thrown
out at home plate.
Rays continued to increase their lead as in fifth inning, Elliot Johnson homered (403 feet) towards left-field and gave the Rays a 4-1 lead. During sixth and seventh inning, batters failed to raise the lead of their respective teams. Price permitted only
one run, six hits, two walks and one earned run on his 114 pitches.
Shoppach said, “Almost pitched a little bit backwards from what he normally does. And it worked. He was able to throw them for strikes and get them swinging early which is how he was able to go so deep in the game.”
Rays’ manager, Joe Maddon was amused with the performance of his team and said, “You talk about the homers, but the pitching and defence were spectacular.”
Eighth inning was also in favour of the Rays’ batters as Longoria hit a solo homer (387 feet) towards right-field to lift the potential of his team with 5-1 lead. On the other side, Yankees failed to score runs in ninth inning and were struck-out on their
sloppy shots.
With that credible victory, Rays took 1-0 lead in the three-game series played at New York.
