David Price sparks as Tampa Bay Rays defeat Toronto Blue Jays 12-0 – MLB Update
David Price punched out a record breaking fourteen batters, Desmond Jennings blistered two home-runs and Matt Joyce touched three hits, as the Tampa Bay Rays humiliate the Toronto Blue Jays 12-0 at Rogers Centre in Toronto on Sunday, August 28 to take a
3-0 lead in four-game matchup.
The 26-year-old left-hand ball thrower broke the Tampa Bay Rays’ franchise record, taking 14 strike-outs over just seven innings. Price was making some unplayable pitching under cloudy conditions to get his 12th win of the season.
"I've never had that much movement before so it was pretty cool," Price said. "The wind kept blowing and it was making my eyes watery all game. I knew it was blowing pretty good and I just kept throwing it."
Price shattered the franchise record for strike-outs shared by Scott Kazmir and James Shields. His first seven outs were all earned through strike-outs while only two hits were bestowed during that span.
Rays’ manager Joe Maddon was pleased than ever before in this season.
He explained Price by saying, "He had everything working today, the changeup, the slider, the backdoor cutter. Everything was working off the fastball. That's why their hitters could not get comfortable at all."
Desmond Jennings launched a beautiful hit of 365-feet long to get the first home-run of the outing in the first inning against the Blue Jays’ starter Brandon Morrow. Jennings launched another in the second for one run. Sean Rodriguez also joined him with
a 441-feet long two-run homer. Jaso Jose also played an RBI single to elevate the lead to 5-0 in the second inning.
After this inning, Morrow struck back and allowed only two hits in the next five innings until his manager John Farrell replaced him with Rommie Lewis in the middle of the sixth inning.
Rommie allowed an RBI single to Matt Joyce in the seventh. Eighth remained scoreless, but Jaso Jose stroked a triple to right-field allowing Matt Joyce to score in the ninth inning. While Jaso was on the third base, Desmond Jennings hit to shallow centre
allowing him to add the eighth run. Evan Longoria hit a sacrifice fly an RBI single and then Ben Zobrist scored an RBI single. Matt Joyce touched another hit for an RBI double to close down the game at 12-0 win and 3-0 series lead.
With this win, the Rays have improved their chances for the post-season. Rays are now sharing the fourth position in American League with Detroit Tigers, as both have 73 wins.
