David Price’s eight shut-out innings helps Tampa Bay Rays rout Boston Red Sox 4-0 - MLB Update
Tampa Bay Rays’ starter, David Price had a tremendous day with his pitching as he surrendered just three hits in his eight score-less innings and gave the Rays a 4-0 win against Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, Boston on August 17.
Rays scored their initial run in first inning to get a 1-0 lead. Ben Zobrist was grounded out to second base but Johnny Damon scored a single run and Evan Longoria occupied second base to end the first inning. The pitchers took charge and limited some runs
during second and third inning to lift the momentum of their teams.
At the top of second inning, Rays’ batters seemed powerless as at short-stop position, Matt Joyce grounded out and at third base Desmond Jennings grounded out without taking runs. Similarly, at the bottom of second inning, Red Sox right-fielder, Darnell
McDonald and Carl Crawford both grounded out to short-stop and at right-field Jed Lowrie popped out.
During third inning, Damon hit a double-run shot towards left-field while at second base Longoria fouled out and at third base Zobrist grounded out. B.J. Upton hit a solo homer (400 feet) towards left-field to give the Rays a 2-0 lead, at the top of fourth
inning. Longoria struck a one-run homer (368 feet) towards left-field to advance the Rays’ lead, 3-0.
Sixth inning was again controlled by the pitchers as they struck-out batters on their curve-balls. Price permitted three walks with an ERA of 3.59 and had six strike-outs on his 116 pitches. Speaking to reporters, Price said, “I would have been very happy.
I'd hope the first guy gave up five and the next guy gave up four. The last one none.”
Rays’ manager, Joe Maddon said, “When you play in this venue or the new Yankee Stadium, that venue, it should draw the best out of you. It's like a salve or an ointment. It should pull it out there and that's what I think happens to us.”
Rays got a 4-0 lead at the top of seventh inning when Zobrist drove a double-run shot towards deep left-field and Kelly Shoppach added one run. Longoria occupied third base to end the seventh inning. Despite this amazing win, the Rays lost the three-game
series 2-1 against Boston Red Sox at Boston.
