David Ross’ double RBIs help Atlanta Braves defeat Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 – MLB Update
Atlanta Braves’ catcher, David Ross had a remarkable day with the bat as he went 2-for-4 with an average of .296 and hit two decisive RBIs in the Braves’ 2-1 victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Turner Field, Atlanta on July 27.
The first five innings of the game were score-less as they did not allow any run to the batters. At the top of the first inning, Xavier Paul was grounded out to first base, Garrett Jones and Pedro Alvarez both flied out to centre-field. Similarly, the Pirates’
batters also struggled as Nate McLouth grounded out to second base and Freddie Freeman grounded out to short-stop position at the bottom of the first inning.
During the fourth inning, Freeman doubled to deep left-field but Wilson Ramirez popped out to short-stop and Julio Lugo grounded out to second base. The Pirates missed the scoring opportunities in the fifth inning as Eric Fryer grounded out to short-stop,
Paul Maholm grounded out to first base and Paul grounded out to second base.
The Pirates scored their first run at the top of the sixth inning when Jones hit a one-run homer (423 feet) towards right-centre. On the other hand, the Braves’ batters also posted a single run to tie the game 1-1 at the bottom of the sixth inning. Ross
singled to left-field and Martin Prado added one run. Dan Uggla occupied second base at the end of sixth inning.
The game remained level until the ninth inning as the batters were struck-out in search of runs. In the ninth inning, Andrew McCutchen flied out to left-field, Alvarez and Steve Pearce both struck-out swinging.
Ross said, “You're not replacing B-Mac. I'm trying to get in there and hold down the fort until he comes back. I would have done the same thing they did, pitch around him to get to me.”
The Braves’ manager, Fredi Gonzalez was satisfied with the performance of his team and said, “I can't think of very many teams in the major leagues that have the quality we do at the backup catcher position.”
In the final 10th inning, Ross drove a single-run shot towards left-field and McLouth contributed a tie-breaking run to give the Braves a 2-1 lead. With this nail-biting win, the Braves led off 2-1 in the four-game series at Atlanta.
