David Rudisha all set to repeat his performance at Athletissima – Samsung Diamond League
With Athletissima’s annual athletics meeting around the corner, elite runners from around the globe have started giving final touches to their preparation with the aim to oust potential rivals that may cause hindrance on their way to the big title. Among
these athletes, one big name is that of David Rudisha, the 22-year old middle distance runner from Kenya, who also holds the 800m record for clocking a time of one minute and 41.01 seconds.
Organised at the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise, in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Athletissima meeting this year will kick-off on June 30, 2011. First held in 1997 and previously regarded as a part of the IAAF Super Grand Prix, the race has now been made a
part of the prestigious IAAF Diamond League.
With one of the most awaited athletics event of Switzerland just less than a week away, spectators would be happy to learn that the field shaping up for the seventh leg of the Samsung Diamond League series this year, is one of the finest ever in the history
of the event.
Besides Rudisha, other prominent athletes who will appear in the meet will comprise of Imane Merga, the long distance runner from Ethiopia who specializes in 5,000m and 10,000m competitions, Tariku Bekele, a specialist in 5000m run, Vincent Chepkok, the
long distance runner from Kenya, along with Augustin Choge, Kenya’s Mark Kiptoo and his countryman, Lucas Rotich and Edwin Soi.
The interesting point about this field is that all of the above mentioned athletes who have ensured their participation in the event have displayed an under 13-minute performance for a distance of 5000m. Given the circumstances, the track record of thirteen
minutes and 1.93 seconds marked by Sammy Kipketer, Kenyan long distance runner about eleven years ago, will certainly be in danger.
Among the prominent women athletes that are expected to entertain spectators are American long jumper and winner of the 2008 summer Olympics, Brittney Reese, who will be encountering the reigning European Champion, Latvia’s Ineta Radevic, for the title.
