David Toms acknowledged for Shot of the Day at the Crowne Plaza Invitational
David Toms was honoured with the Shot of the Day accolade in the final round of the $6.2 million-Crowne Plaza Invitational, which took place at the par-70 Colonial Country Club in Texas. The winner sank an 83-yard long eagle on
the par-5 11th to earn the award.
Toms stood on the eleventh tee with a score of 1-under-par after ten holes. He discussed the required trajectory to make the shot, which would land between the fairway bunker and the rough. The 44-year-old veteran pulled a tee
shot with a driver that plunged 298 yards and landed between the two hazards. The crowd cheered at the accuracy of the drive that compelled the veteran to double their delight and that is exactly what he did. He fired another superb shot with a 4-iron that
plunged the entire fairway and landed 83 yards away from the cup.
The Louisianan, who lives few miles away from the course, Toms decided to use the home-ground advantage and using the edge of several practice sessions held on the course, he grounded an L wedge, hitting an 83-yard long eagle onto
the green. The crowd roared at the magnificent shot, but all of a sudden, their applause went silent, as the ball hit the flag and reflected. With gap of a second, the ball started moving again, courtesy of the wind and rolled into the cup casting ‘Shot of
the Day’.
The player rolled another birdie and a bogey in the closing holes and surged into victory after a gap of five years.
Toms walked towards the clubhouse with a huge smile on his face and his son on his side. Needless to say, he was still in a shock, when asked to comment on the victory.
"I am not dreaming, am I? This is actually happening, right? Oh, man. Wow, I didn't know if this day would ever come again to be quite honest. It was a great round of golf today. It took one. If you look at Charlie and I, I don't
know what was third place, but I know it was pretty far back. So it shows you what the golf course was playing like,” said Toms after his win.
